On January 2024, in front of an audience of 8,000 spectators at the Vitrifrigo Arena, Sergio Mattarella, the President of the Italian Republic, officially inaugurated Pesaro, a port city on the Adriatic coast, as the ÒCapital of CultureÓ.
On 20 July the same year, an event will be held at Montemaggiore al Metauro, about 25kms south of Pesaro, to commemorate the visit of Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister, to Allied Forces who had succeeded in taking control of the German-controlled area.
As I have been invited to give a presentation at this event with Nicoletta Maggi, an Italian journalist, I decided to research the stories about Montemaggiore that appeared in the English-speaking newspapers in Britain, India, the West Indies, the United States, Australia and Tasmania.
A search of the newspaper archives of the British, Australian and American libraries revealed about 2,000 articles mentioning Montemaggiore. I quickly learned that there are towns with the same name in Corsica and Sicily and several hills called Monte Maggiore.
To give the reader a greater understanding of how Montemaggiore and Monte Maggiore have been reported on by English-speaking reporters, I have compiled a selection of articles from the 18th to the 21st century.
